SAO deputies coordinate with other deputies, Detectives, Probation, and civilian Public Safety Officers to develop information necessary to resolve ongoing crimes and nuisances within the City. The City’s Special Assignment Officers (SAO) is a team of deputies that proactively enforce crimes involving gang, juvenile, and narcotics activities. In the last couple of years, the Detective Bureau has effectively attained the necessary information in order to submit successful investigations to the District Attorney’s Office for prosecution. The Detective Bureau is responsible for the investigation of crimes. They are crucial in preventing accidents that can cause serious injury or death. Traffic deputies enforce “moving” violations such as speed, failure to obey traffic signs, seatbelt laws, etc. Sheriff's traffic units are essential in reducing injury traffic collisions throughout the City. When patrol deputies are not answering dispatched calls, they are encouraged to conduct proactive patrols, which includes looking for potential problems, suspicious persons or situations, and executing arrest warrants. These deputies patrol the City in an effort to deter criminal activity in our neighborhood. The primary function of patrol deputies is crime prevention. The Sheriff's Department provides general law enforcement, traffic enforcement, crime investigation, and special services. The City of La Mirada contracts with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for law enforcement services.
